Here’s an interesting post I came across today on Marketingprofs. Based on comScore research, “Local newspaper websites remain the most used and valued online sources of credible and trustworthy local content and advertising.” It’s all about credibility, and evolving social media networks and other new web technologies simply don’t have it YET. When moving into one of these new channels, it’s critical that marketers address their customers’ concerns about credibility and trustworthiness. It could be the difference between a marketing campaign that pops or one that flops.

As I think about measuring the value of my organization’s participation in social media networks, I thought I would share some useful insight provided by Amber Naslund at the Altitude Branding blog. Amber writes, “Followers or click throughs on their own don’t tell you anything of value. Making metrics meaningful means weaving them together to glean insights, not just data.”

So, for example, I have a hypothesis that increased positive participation on our social media networks will have a positive effect on membership retention. By mapping out the number of followers, interaction levels, type/quality of feedback, and membership retention (with all else being equal), I can begin testing my hypothesis. Over time, I can make adjustments to metrics used or my initial hypothesis to get the meaningful measurement I am looking for. Who knows…I might discover a few unexpected insights things along the way.

Amber goes on to explain that they key to making this work is to ensure your organization establishes a culture of analytics. I couldn’t agree more. To read the rest of Amber’s post at the Altitude Branding blog, click here.
